| For Immediate Release October 20, 2004 Media Contact: Super Saturday Event focuses on Millet to Matisse exhibitVisit the Oklahoma City Museum of Art on Saturday, November 20 from 1-4 p.m. for an exciting, fun-filled afternoon of Super Saturday activities the whole family will enjoy. Inspired by the special exhibit Millet to Matisse: Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century French Painting from Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow, Super Saturday offers both young and old the opportunity to not only see important French works, but also to immerse themselves in the French culture that produced such famous painters as Van Gogh, Monet, and Cassatt. Super Saturday activities include hands-on art making, such as drawings and paper creations in the Impressionist style, in the Museum classrooms; docent led tours of Millet to Matisse; live French music in the Museum Lobby; and a family-oriented performance by actress Jenny Aldrich. Aldrich will present her dramatic portrayal of Mary Cassatt in A Chat with Mary Cassatt, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Noble Theater. Cassatt was the only American artist to exhibit with the Impressionists and is the only American artist included in the exhibit. Listen as she describes the people and events that shaped her life and work. Education sponsors include Sarkeys Foundation, Sonic, America's Drive-In, Education Endowments, and Target. All Super Saturday events are free with paid museum admission. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, children five and under, and Museum members are free. For more information call (405) 236-3100, ext. 237. Visit online at www.okcmoa.com About the Millet to Matisse Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow houses one of the most important collections of French paintings in Great Britain. For Millet to Matisse, Guest Curator Vivien Hamilton has selected sixty-four of the Gallery's most acclaimed paintings by artists who worked in France during the extraordinary period of creativity between 1830 and 1930. Comprised mostly of gifts and bequests, the collection reflects the shifting trends in the dealing and collecting of French art in western Scotland during an economically and culturally fertile period. Glasgow's appreciation for French art also played a vital role in the emergence of various local artistic movements which found inspiration in the works of Corot, Millet, Courbet, and the Barbizon group and later were influenced by the technique and palette of Cézanne, Gauguin, and Matisse. =30= |
